Supporting sustainable travel

It is our vision to open up Indonesian’s amazing islands to everyone to enjoy, not just the privileged few in sustainable ways. The Scallywags founders, Jacky and Nigel, built their resorts to maximise the efficiency of resources including water, energy and raw materials.

Scallywags Resorts are designed with five key areas in mind:

To minimise the ecological impact during the construction phase, Scallywags used only natural and locally sourced building materials, plus locally sourced island labour and supervision.

Scallywags Resort has an overall master plan to open up 10 small, idyllic island resorts linked by a traditional Phinisi cruising ship to move customers between each location. Each resort, spanning from Bali to the Komodo Islands, will have luxurious rooms and suites, outstanding beach restaurants, spa and dive centres.

The scallywags commitment to the environment

Daily Refuse Management

The Scallywags Team are trained to separate refuse such as packaging, paper, glass, and hazardous waste. Frequent checks are made and reminders are given on a regular basis to ensure efficient recycling. The local islanders collect all plastic bottles and cardboard and sell them for recycling. Grease traps have been installed in all the kitchens, which separate grease and cooking oils from the water to avoid polluting the wastewater network.

Energy Control

When possible, all lamps are equipped with LED bulbs resulting in a consumption reduction of 80% compared to conventional bulbs, whilst still providing the same lighting intensity. The flat-screen TV sets are LED as they generally use as little as 25% of the power a plasma screen of similar size uses. We have selected a brand with a proven low energy rating.
All guest rooms feature 50mm cavity wall construction with thermal insulation and noise attenuation qualities. Gypsum cladding is installed in the rooms to double up insulation that keeps the heat out of the air-conditioned rooms and reduces resorts consumption of electricity.
Since opening for business in May 2007, it is estimated that the energy consumption measures and systems have combined to reduce annual power consumption by approximately 14%.

Water management Control

Scallywags Resorts are equipped with the latest technology Building System that collects rainwater that is stored in underground collection tanks. The housekeeping department is trained in how to use different cleaning products. They utilise the right rations to ensure the rinsing time is reduced and therefore there is less water waste and pollution from products.
The WC’s installed throughout are renowned for low water consumption by having duel flush and saltwater flush. Scallywags Resorts all use state of the art desalination plants to make sure water coming into the bathroom sinks is separated from the rainwater and freshwater from the mainland.

Landscaping

You may be surprised to learn that 50% of Scallywags Resorts building’s total footprint is covered by green areas. We do not believe in high-density building. Local plant species are grown and maintained without fertilisers or artificial weed killers and are watered entirely by recycled AC water collected from the AC units.

The Scallywags Social and Communal Responsibility

Scallywags supports a strong local social cohesion founded on strong values such as solidarity and the respect of diversity. We let all our Scallywags Team contribute to the development of our company along with their personal and professional development. We involve ourselves in social projects, where we assist people with social difficulties by introducing them back into workforces.

Your Commitment

All efforts in protecting our environment would be in vain if not accompanied by responsible behaviour. We therefore ask all of our guests to take part in reducing our environmental impact.
